REpower Systems AG (Hamburg, Germany) announced on Dec. 19 that it has completed the assembly of the first three REpower 6M turbines in Bremerhaven. The wind turbines, which each have a rated output of 6 MW, are expected to be erected at the Westre civic wind farm on the German-Danish border. There, they will undergo a comprehensive testing program and checks for certification according to the DIBT classification.
The new offshore wind turbine technology is based on the successful 5M range. Since the dimensions correspond exactly to those of the REpower 5M, the REpower 6M can later be used in all the projects planned for this turbine type. In future, series production will take place in the wind energy company’s new assembly hall in Bremerhaven, which is designed to produce and directly ship more than 80 nacelles and hubs per year. The hall tests for the three 6M turbines were recently completed there successfully. At the beginning of 2009, the turbines are to be erected at the Westre civic wind farm, owned by Grenzstrom Vindtved GmbH & Co. KG, in which 200 limited partners from the communities of Westre, Ellhöft and the Danish town of Lydersholm have holdings.
Speaking about the progress of the project, the REpower CEO Per Hornung Pedersen, said, “With the first installation of the REpower 6M, which is due to take place shortly, we are once again proving our leading technological position in the field of multi-megawatt turbines. We expect that the Offshore division will continue to grow in importance and that the future of wind energy in Europe will be found to a large extent on the open seas.”
At the beginning of next year, REpower is also expected to sign a framework agreement with RWE Innogy GmbH, which has already been announced.
